front housing swap
i currently have a 78 ranger with a dana 60 in the rear and i don't know what the front is but all four corners have drums. I just bought an 89 ford 1 ton with 3.55 gears in thr rear and 3.54 in the front. the 89 has disks on the front and i want to swap my old front housing for the newer one. i need to know if they will even fit and what i have to have to do the swap. i don't know if the new housing would be as stong cause it has it looks like it has u joints in the front axle where my old one has a solid hosing.

I believe the mounting points for the leafs are different. I read a post on another site where a guy was trying to trade his 78/79 dana 60 front axle for a later model 60 front axle. Not sure if he ever found a trade or not. He wanted to trade because of mounting differences and it would have been to much fab work to get the axle he had to fit. I can dig up a link to that site if you want me to.

Proeliator has done this, swapped a later model axle in place of an older axle. I take it you have a closed knuckle axle, these axles are far far weaker as the shafts are smaller (dana 44 strenght) and the closed knuckle is weaker as well.
IF you don't want to use that axle (the one off the 89) i would be willing to purchase it if the price is right as i have an 81 4wd that i'm search of a that same axle you have. pm me if you are interested.
