Injection Pump Trouble Shooting

Hello I own a 1986 F-250 with 6.9 and auto tranny 4X4, and 100,1400 miles on the clock. Has devolped the following symptoms:

1. Last week started it up ran a couple of seconds then died, then started up again and ran fine. Did this a couple of days during the morning start up. Starts and runs any other time.

2. Seems like it has low power. 0-60 mph is about 20 sec, I know these are not rockets but seem slower than usual.

3. At high rpms 3000-3500 seems like the engine misses and cuts out.

4. A few months ago going down road, died on me , sat few minutes(10-15min) and started right up.

Futher info: I have changed fuel filter, gave it heavy dose of power sevice, changed air filter. The IP is the original as far as I can tell. No smoke unless under load.

My questions as far as trouble spots, IP? Injectors? Air leak???? Your comments and help much needed..........Andy

Sounds like mine and it has a confirmed diagnosis of an impotent pump.

Might want to test the lift pump first.........
Do pressure and flow test on the fuel at the Schrader valve on the filter(FSS- fuel shutoff switch disconnected). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation proceedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.
