I had a volare to put in my truck, but wasn't too comfortable cutting that much of the frame or making that big of spacers to keep from cutting the frame. But I did ride in a few F-1's that a guy around here did, put Volare clips in all 3 of the ones he built(his, his daughter's, and his son's) and they rode nice, and they have the benefit of the adjustment in height.

Would changing the size of the power steering pump pulley help this out? Just thinking out loud...

I am using a mercedes PS pump in mine, and I think it doesn't steer fast enough. BUT the one thing I don't have new is the steering gear itself.. so this could be a steering gear problem.

I used a Cordoba clip, its different than the Volare clip in that the torsion bars run longitudinal. It also is a bit heavier, I believe. It’s not on the road yet, so we’ll see about the drive and handling.

Volare in mine and in 2 of friends, Cordoba in friends ride excellent. Saw a 4th at car show and the owner put in an adjustable orifice from some hydraulic equipment at his job at Coors. Claims to have cured fast steer.

You know, that would seem the most logical thing to do too. Mine steers in the direction I point it...I don't know of any problems.

The Volare is an OK setup, but not the best IMO. I would go with something a bit more beefier if I was to do it over again. The Dakota kits seem the way to go now. Better yet, I have a Mechanical Engineering freind of mine that would jump at the chance to design me a front end...we have discussed it more than once

Watch out for the engineering friends. Last week, I had to show a electrical engineer from Miss St how to ohm out a headlight switch with a fluke meter and I have a job with my name on my shirt. he he

Volare clip

I've started tearing down the clip I got out of a Diplomat, and I'm trying to figure out how to get the little vibration dampner/pivot box off the steering box? It's about five inches long, and maybe 3 inches in diameter... and is mounted right on the end of the shaft coming out of the steering box.

Also, I am wondering how to disassemble the upper and lower ball joints?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ben

Look for a rolled pin you have to drive out....the lower ball joints in mine had just been replaced but I had to replace the uppers. There is a special tool you need to unscrew them. I took mine to NAPA and had it done. Even they didn't have the special tool and ordered one to do my job.

As Vern stated, the ball joints are screwed in.
A little heat and some channel locks may do the trick for ya. (worked for me)
Good Luck

Mine were practically welded in with rust. There's no way I would have got them out with channel locks...

I couldn't drive the rolled pin out of the steering shaft on mine, and had to cut (cutoff wheel) mine off (split it down the length)..

for the ball joints.. there is a special press tool, you can rent for free at Autozone, or buy at Harbor Freight. item 38335, on sale now for $19.99

Sam, have you used this "C-clamp" style tool on the Volare ball joints? I saw a picture of a different style, and just want to make certain this style will work for me...

Thanks!

it did for me.. I rented from Autozone.

The ball joints are just pressed into the arms., this presses them in and out.
