steering box?
I have a 79 f150 and my son a 73 f100. While trying to diagnose some steering troubles in the 73 I noticed the steering box is the same one in my 79. How can I tell if someone has already done a conversion to the later style in the 73. The steering shaft from the rag joint to the first u-joint is different longer and the placement on the 73 of the box is further forward- toward the radiator. I think the steering box on the 73 is shot but I want to made sure when I go to get parts I get the right thing. The part number on both boxes is D7TC 3850-CA.

The popular steering swap using the 78/9 steering box is a 4X4 thing. If you have a 2 wheel drive all 69-79 use the same basic design and are interchangable. The D7T part number means the box you have is a 77 or newer part so it has been replaced but if you have a 2 wheel drive it was likely replaced because it leaked. If you have a 4X4 then yes, somebody has already upgraded your truck. Hawkrod
