Hey guys I'm new to the site and am wondering if any of you could help me out. I can't seem to find what I'm looking for on the site. I've got an 86 Bronco 4x4 with the 300 six engine. What I want to do is Swap in a 351 windsor from an 85 Crown Vic police Cruiser. I've been told the swap will work but that I need a new flywheel because I'm going from a automatic transmission to a Manual. Where I run into the problem is that no one can tell me what flywheel I'm supposed to use. If anyone has gone through this type of swap any info would be greatly appreciated.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Apr-02 AT 12:33 PM (EST)]I just replaced my 300 six with a 351W. The flywheel on your six won't work because of the differences in the way it's balanced versus the 351 (not to mention your 351 has a flexplate). I bought my flywheel from Advance Auto for $75. Just ask for a flywheel for an 85 351W and they'll know what to do. I'm at work now, but I have the receipt at home and it may have the part number on it, I'll check tonight. You're also gonna have to replace the motor mounts and the perches so when you get the 351 see if you can get them with it. Also get the alternator brackets, power steering brackets, smog pump (if you decide to keep the smog stuff on there) and brackets, AC brackets, and the crank and waterpump pulleys. Basically anything that the 351 has attached to it. I bought a motor to rebuild and paid dearly to find these parts since mine didn't have them. None of the brackets or pulleys from the six will work on the 351. Lastly you'll need to change radiators. The 300 uses a thin little radiator that might be ok but I wouldnt take the chance. Besides the top inlet is on the other side for a 351. Hope this helps some. I kept a spreadsheet on everything I did and what it cost me. Email me if I can help you any at all.
Ok, checked the receipt and it gives me a part number and description as follows:
PA 15260006 1@69.99 Flywheel MT 04629
As I said before I got this at Advance Auto so all these numbers maybe their numbers. Any good parts store should be able to help you as long as you ask for a flywheel for an 85 351W.
Good luck.
I am looking to do the same thing with my '86 F150 4X4. I take it that the tranny hooked up OK with the new motor mount perches. No new driveshafts needed etc.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Apr-02 AT 08:58 PM (EST)]Exactly right Charlie, from the clutch and pressure plate back everything is original. Flywheel forward is a different story, everything had to be replaced. I had put a new clutch and pressure plate in about a year ago or I would have changed that too. Bellhousing bolted right up too. The 300 six and small blocks (302's and 351W's) have the same type bellhousing. I did put in a new throwout bearing and pilot bearing though. Mine is a 4x4 and the tranny, transfer case, and driveshafts weren't affected at all. Well.....other than having to handle all those new ponies.....
*evil chuckle*
I have an automatic in mine so it may not be as complicated. In any case it would probably make more sense to go ahead and get the proper flywheel. Having done these sort of silly things before it is usually the least suspecting thing that hangs you up. I had planned to get all the assessory attachments with the engine and had planned for a new, HD cooling radiator. Nothing else though (other than the motor mount perches and exhaust mod.).
Once the truck is out of the shop later this month (getting the rust fixed) I can get started. Sounds like some fun to me.
Thanks a lot. That does help a lot. None of the parts stores where I live know a damn thing about that type of work. If it dosen't come from that particular setup they can't get the numbers for ya. I'm gonnna give Advance a call though. I might have to have one shipped in from Main cause I don't think we have one but I'm not sure. I have the whole car the engine came out of. It was in an 85 Crown Vic police Cruiser and my dad rebuilt the engine. About 3 weeks later the floor rusted out and I blew the trans so we junked the car. So I have all the pumps ect... I don't know about all the wiring though.
Ayway thanks a lot.
Sorry about posting to the Truck section but it was more likely that someone here knew more about the swap I'm trying to do then on the Bronco side as It seems that Trucks seem to get done up more. Sorry again.
Well I found a Flywheel. It's gonna cost me $175 Cdn. But my local engine rebuilder can get it right away Thanks again. Now I just gotta go and swap the darn thing in. That should take a while to get up the nerve to try. HaHa.
