Vacuum Advance

How can you tell if the vacuum advance system on your distributor is working properly. I have a 1981 F-100 with 60000 kms on it and I have practically done everything to it to try and improve its gas mileage. Some times it appears to be pretty good, then the next time I drive it seems to use twice as much as before.
So any way to check my vacuum advance.

Vacuum Advance

well the way to test is use a timing light first and just see if your timing mark advances if you hit the gas, another way is to use a vacumm tester which is fairly cheap and you can get one at any parst store(also good for bleeding brakes by your self). The third way involves no tools and that is to find a vacumm line that has full vacumm at idle(manifold vacumm) and plug it onto the vacumm port of the advance canister. If the engine suddenly speeds up then your advance is working.
