I'm replacing a fried 351M enigine in an '81 F-150 with a 300 ci 6-cyl. (also replacing the C6 transmission) Can the 2-barrel carb on the 351M be adapted to the in-line six without going to a great deal of expense and bother? Would it be worth the effort?
I'm also considering other modifications. My goal is to build a truck that is as rugged and dependable as I can make it, and still be easily maintained and repaired under the shade tree. It will get driven on bad roads, rarely off-road, and frequently up steep hills. I'd like to get as much pulling power out of the engine as I can, without defeating the rugged and reliable requirement.
Some people have put 2 barrel carbs on but I'm really not sure if there is a big benefit unless your willing to change the intake system and exhaust. The 300 six is one of the best pulling engines you will find. I just finished pulling a 24 foot fully loaded U-Haul truck out of the mud with my little 300 six 4x4 and the tires did not even spin once. Find something to beat that?
