I just bought an '86 F250 4x4 with a 6.9 and C6. After reading dozens of posts regarding this engine, I'm still confused about getting more ponies out of the engine. What is the "soupbowl", where is located and how does removing it improve airflow? Any help is appreciated!
look at the the lid of your air filter housing it looks werid don't it. if you see a bowl (kind of a screwed up hat) comming down from the flat lid portion. If you can find it or its really easy to change your air filter then don't worry about sombody probably took it off.
noise is the only thing I can think of. If you were going to chance the air filter, you undo the wing nut and remove the lid. the contraption in the centerof the lid that makes it hard to remove the cover is the soup bowl. It actually fills the gap inside the filter. I just sawed mine off ,and what a difference. it now sounds a little like the old four bbl carbs on take off. but there is a large improvement in performance.
I left a little ridge so the top of the air filter has some support on the top so the air flow won't collapse the fit good luck Phil
Thanks for the replies. I opened the air cleaner and didn't find anything that looks like a soupbowl, but in the bottom of the cleaner is an odd shaped plate that reduces the air intake size by about half. Thats coming out tonight.

What you found is the soupbowl. Change your air filter while you are there. Be careful when you cut. Don't leave any metal shavings in it to get sucked into the engine.
I know what you guys are talking about as the 'soupbowl" (the odd shaped protrusion from the bottom of the air cleaner lid- right? but what is this 'odd shaped plate' you speak of???
The soup bowl is on the lid of the air cleaner. There is also a cone on the bottom that cuts the size of the opening out of the air cleaner into the intake manifold to about 1/2 of the size of the intake manifold throat.
My 86 F250 did not have a soup bowl, but it did have the little 2.5" throat on the bottom air cleaner housing.
Metal blade in a jig saw and a 4" grinder made that hole a lot bigger.
I cut everything off the lid of my mine that didn't look like a traditional AC lid from a carburated engine from the good old days. Recon I got that pesky bowl.
Took less than 5 min. with a 4" grinder with a thin cut off wheel!!!!! Watch for those sharp flashings. Don't like to bleed much. I love cheap mods.
Well I guess there is always more to learn, being new to diesels. When I heard about the soup bowl I looked in mine and the only thing I found was the curved bottom plate. I didn't find anything on the top. I assumed that was the bowl. I stand corrected. What about the thing that directs the air both ways?
