Starting Question?

I have a 1999 ford sd f-250 V-10 auto. My question is that when I start my truck in the morning it dies right out. It fires up great and then after a secound or two it just dies. On real cold mornings I have to go through this twice before it starts and runs great! On warmer day this is not a problem at all or after I run it for a while it's good. I also noticed this after I get to work and it sits for 10 hours on real cold days the same think happens! I thought it was not getting any gas so I made sure that I turned the key to the on position waited a minute then tryed to start it still the same thing. It only happens on real cold days so any help would be appreciated! And Thanks in advance.

i think a check of the ecu for possible codes is where to start, i have worked on cars that had a bad engine temp senser and would stall out when first started . there are truely to many variables to say without seeing if you have any codes to start with, someone with a very good scaner should be able to see if the senser is in or out of spec. if it always tells the engine i'm warm then cold start problems may happen as it would not tell the ecu i'm cold raise the idle. a mechanics 2 cents

Bad IAC. Do a search for IAC (Idle Air Control valve) been discussed hundreds of times. Easy fix.

IAC is probably getting stuck when cold. I had one that only failed when it rained.

I have had this truck hooked up to a scanner recently and it showed no trouble codes? I also have a superchip tuner and when back to the stock program and this has a diagnostic program in it and it did not show any codes! Will the IAC show a code? I'm going to do a search right now. Thanks for the help!

If I remember correctly, the scanner would not show a code but a good scanner would show the position (1 to 5? really stretching the memory here). If in the wrong position, like all the way open (or closed), not enough fuel / air to ignite. Sometimes taking the hose off to the IAC and then covering it by hand would be enough for the engine to turn over and run.

Replace the IAC. What you described is a very common problem and has probably happened or will happen to most people at some point in time. Replace it and it should fix your problem.

Another vote for replacing the IAC. I can guarantee you that is the problem. My '99 did the EXACT same thing last winter. The guys here advised me about the IAC, and after replacing it, I've had no more problems.
