I have the opportunity to purchase a 1993 F350, 4x4, cc, srw, diesel. The truck has 160,000 miles on it, body in excellent shape, unsure of motor condition/upkeep. I know that present owner is at least the 3rd owner. I have only spoken to owner, haven't seen truck other than picture in paper. Asking price is $10,000, I guess my question is "Is this a worthy buy?". Should I bother to go and look at it. Thanks in advance for any input.
They are good trucks, but I am not sure on the price. Have you Checked online with Kelley Blue Book or NADA? You could get an idea of the price from there. Also try looking if there are any local lots selling a similar truck. I would definately have it checked out by a mechanic if you are interested before you purchase it. Hopefully some one else here is more familiar with the 93 diesels.
That price sounds about right for a diesel of that year with that amount of miles. The diesel trucks really hold their value. I would hold out for a 94.5-97 instead though. Those have the 7.3L Powerstroke diesel (more power than the earlier diesels, more aftermarket support too).
Also, if you intend to tow alot or run oversize tires (up to 35"), make sure you get one with 4.10 gears. They came with choice of either 3.55 or 4.10. On the info sticker on the driver's door, axle codes 39 and C9 are 3.55's and codes 35 and C5 are 4.10's. The 'C' indicates a limited slip rear diff, otherwise it's an open diff. The front diff is always open, unless someone put a traction diff in it aftermarket.
The F350 trucks are pretty solid. With any 4x4 though, check the ball joints and tie rod ends for wear, also look at how the front tires are wearing.
That's a pretty good deal if the truck's in good shape in Hawii. Quite a bit more restricted selection that in the 48. Have a mechanic check out the diesel and find a comfort level you can live with. The PSD is a better powerplant but may not be an option on the islands.
Looked at the truck last night, clean, from Las Vegas (no rust). Test drive proved to be just as impressive, strong pull with 5 spd (no worries about E4OD). Seems to ride better than my own truck, I have the gas version. As much as I would like to buy it, I think I will heed the advise from both SoCal and tex94 about waiting for a PSD. Thanks much for all your input, aloha.
