I've been calling around to different dealers in my area, asking for details on used 04 Expy 4x4's, and I'm having a hard time with one thing: how to figure out if the truck has the 3.73 limited-slip differential option. Many dealers in my area seem to have no clue about what options are on their used trucks, other than the obvious ones (cap chairs, leather, 6-CD, DVD). From the pictures, I can tell if it has AdvanceTrac (from the badge on the rear hatch or the switch on the center console), which means it can't have the LSD. But if there's no AT, it's up to the dealer to know whether the truck on their lot has the LSD.
I have seen some listings on eBay that have a picture of the production label on the side of the body next to the driver's door, includes VIN, production month and plant, etc. There is an axle code there, and I think the LSD is an axle code of 16. Is that correct? Or is there a different code, or some other way of knowing whether it has the LSD (other than climbing under the vehicle)?
Looks like I answered my own question: I found another post that listed H6 as the 3.73 LS diff on the Expy. So I guess 16 is non-LS. Now I know what to look for to find an Expy with the 3.73 LSD.
Yup! You found it!
All Ford trucks that have a letter as the first part of the axle code means they have a Limited Slip Diff.
A number means Open Diff.
Thanks, Monsta. Actually, now I'm looking at a particular vehicle that I may want to buy, and it has AdvanceTrac (which means no LSD). Does anyone have any feedback for the driving manners of an Expy with the traction control versus the LSD? I know that both the LSD and the tow package are important if you're towing, but I won't be doing much of that (if any). I've been thinking all along that I wanted the LS diffy, but for some reason, a lot of the 04 XLT 4x4's in my area have the AT traction control. The trucks with the LSD seem to be hard to come by, at least the XLT's on the lower end of the price scale (which is where I'm at).
