4x4 malfunction question

from the day i bought my 2002 150 4x4 my "low range" dash light has never turned on... the only time i have ever seen it turn on is when i turn the truck on and about 2 times when my truck actually got stuck in 4x4 low for some reason and magically it came on... so those 2 times when i actually seemed to get my truck to jolt outa 4wheel drive the low range light would not come on anymore... it was pretty weird... does anyone know what the problem could be>

Does it go into low range but the light doesn't work or doesn't it go into low range at all?
Is it a manual shift transfer case or do you have the **** on the dash?
