I bought an '86 F-150 w/351, C-6 trans. The flexplate had a couple of teeth worn and if the starter landed in that spot, the truck wouldn't start until I turned the motor a little. The starter always made a grinding ,dragging sound. I put on a new flexplate and new starter. I marked the flexplate, so I could install it the same way the old one came off.
The new starter sounds as bad as the old one! Is it possible that the old flywheel was reversed and I put the new one in the same way? It looks like the off-set on the flexplate would cause it to hit the block ,if it was reversed, but I'm not sure. I don't want to tear it down again unless it is absolutely necessary. I found one picture in an older manual that shows it is installed correctly, but its not a good picture. I "shimmed the starter out with a couple of washers and that helped, but I need thicker washers. The starter bendix is hitting the ring gear. Does anyone have any suggestions?
