I have an 89 with a 302 that pings under load, specifically when going uphill at or over 55 mph.
I've changed the O2 sensor, distributor-which included a new stator, TFI module, cap and rotor, the spark plug leads are new too. The timing is on 10 btdc. I've tried advancing and retarding, still pings.
I tried a new EGR valve, cleaned out the pipes and checked the vac lines, it still pings.
This truck used to run awesome, then one day...ping, ping, ping. It's driving me nuts.
201 000 kms. The plugs were replaced a few months ago and still look new. This problem has been ongoing for some time and still pinged after the new plugs were installed.
I was thinking maybe the catalytic converter too. When I cleaned out the EGR there was a substance in the pipe that resembled sand, thick dark sand. So ya, I don't know, maybe.
