Hey yall,
Ive got an 86 with 4.9 i was thinking about getting some more air out of my engine. My buddy put new exhaust on his and it sounds HORRIBLE! It sounded like an over grown rice burner.
What should i do for a header, piping, and muffler.
I hate to say it buddy but if you are looking for V8 sounds, it ain't gonna happen. Inline sixes have their own unique sound. I am running EFI manifolds dumping into 2 inch duals, into 2.5 inch single, into a 40 series Flowmaster, and 2.25 duals out the back with 3.5 inch tips. It sounds kinda like a cammed V8 at idle, when you get on it, it sounds like a straight piped Peterbilt. I like how it sounds, it's very unique. When my current system rots out, I am gonna install 2.25 duals into a pair Flowmaster 40s and 2.25 duals out the back
Try going to a large single pipe like a 3inch.Put on a real deep throaty muffler like a delta flow. Follow it with a good bit of tail pipe to get rid of the rice burner sound.
Gotta agree with pkupman...it ain't gonna sound like a v8!! I am currently running carb. stock manifold to an empty cat, through an original flowmaster, 2.5'' single piping to a 3.5'' stainless tip about 30'' long. I am sure it is not what it would be with headers and duals. I get a nice low rumble at idle and when I hit 2500 rpm's......you ain't gonna mistake her for a riceburner.....maybe a Freightshaker!!
Mine sounds good, real throaty, 2.25 running from the manifold back to a fresh, new cat and a Flowmaster, sounds real nice. Even a little lope to it. You wanna go real big, swap out the intake to a clifford performance with a 450-500cfm 4 bbl, swap the exhaust manifold to a header or efi exhaust manifolds (they'll work with the Clifford intake) then you can run true duals. You probably don't want to go bigger than 2" if you run true duals because you won't build enough backpressure to keep it running right.
Personally I am really happy with the Flowmaster - could be a little louder, but it sounds wicked nice on my 4.9l. Runs a lot better than the half rotted stock crap that was on it.
