Hi Folks,
I have an 86 f150 4.9L
The starter is sometimes spinning but not engaging. Is there something to clean/grease to fix this or is it time for a new starter?
How hard is it to rebuild one? A can of black spray paint, two brushes and a nose bushing?
If it's only happening some of the time it could very well be a loose battery cable on the battery itself. I had the same problem a while ago, it turned out to be a loose negative battery cable that didn't seem that loose when I wiggled it, but if I pulled straight up it came right off. It was decieving at first, but it solved the problem. Just a thought, good luck.

Your starter is about to take a dump. Replace it before it damages your flywheel. A reman'd starter shouldn't cost more than about $25+core. Good luck - BUBBA
