Just bought a 2001 F250 4x4 SD with the ESOF , has 52,000 miles i've only had it 2 weeks and utill today everything worked fine , been snowing here so 4x4 has been used quite a bit , but now when i turn switch to 4high or 4low it does nothing at all no noises no clicks nor does the light come on but the light does work when first started so its not the bulb , theres a fuse in the cab fuse panel # 15 if i remember correct that Mitchell says is part of the system and should be hot all times "but mine is not hot anytime" , I am a mechanic but not familiar with this system and hate to take it to a dealer " no good ones in my area" , any advice , im new to this board but very impressed with what i see on it . Thnx in advance. TB21
This happened to me, there is two clusters of wires attached to the transfer case, one set has three wires in it, one has several more, make sure both of the plugins attached to these wires are secure and pushed in tight to the transfer case motor. If snow has packed into these clusters it may have pulled one of them loose.
I just went through a similar situation with my '99 F-350. Nothing happened when I turned the 4x4 switch on the panel. I went under my truck and removed the ESOF motor and gearbox. It is really easy to remove, 3 bolts and disconnect 2 wiring harnesses.
After removeal I used a couple of alligator clips and my battery to test the ESOF motor and gearbox. Worked like a champ. So that eliminated the a bad ESOF motor. Then I used my multi meter and hooked it up to the wiring harness under the truck and had my wife turn the switch in the truck to 4x4 and sure enough it was not receiving any power.
So to make a long story short after spending hours looking for a short, removing the switch from the dash, I ended up taking my truck into the Ford dealer and they ended up replacing the GEM module. Cost about $500 to get the GEM module replaced. Works like a champ now.
Also as a note, when I had my truck in the shop a few weeks earlier they had told me the ESOF motor was bad and they wanted to replace it, I did not beleive them which is why I removed and tested it my self.
