alrighty i was reading some earlier posts and came across some that told me roughly how to adjust my idle mixture screws... with the engine turned off. i turned the screws in till they wouldnt turn any more..and backed the out 1.5 turns.(it was like 4 or 5 turns out)..the idle was too low to run the engine at this point... it would start then die out..ok...so i raised the idle alittle bit...got it running right again... and drove it down the street... came back and to my dismay there is alot of noise coming off of my valve train....now what i want to know is what happened... granted... i was doing stuff to my carb... my foot got kinda heavy a couple times... but nothing too specail... made the kickdown operate at like 55 or 60 for like 2 seconds...layed about half a second of rubber at a stop sign.. you know... normal im adjusting my carbureator stuff...oh yea this noise... kinda sounds like a deisel at a low idle... the goes away, well not really but is less obvious when the engine is reved..i dont know if the sound gets quieter or the exaust gets louder either way.. any one got any ideas?
I had this same problem when I first bought my truck. At sometime someone had adjusted the idle mixture to compensate for a vacuum leak and/or a timing problem. When you reset the idle mixture the original problem reappeared. Check good for vacuum leaks and maybe advance the timing a tiny bit. Remember - as an engine with a lot of miles on it wears, like mine at 180,000+ miles, all parts wear together. So if you try to set the timing exactly to factory specs the engine will run a little rough. Set the timing to specs then free-hand it a tiny bit to get a good idle. Have fun - BUBBA
well i used a blow torch and checked for vaccum leaks the best i could... and there dont appear to be any major ones... however i forgot to mention that i just got this carb off of a car at a junkyard... it had a rebuild date of 3-02 and it was only 20 bucks... so i said ok... i dont know why they had it so rich...
