Here's a suggestion and fairly easy. I ended up painting my gold grill black. The gold you see is painted on a black plastic. I went through trial and error, but you could learn from my experience. Simple: Take the whole grill out off the hood even the chrome frame. The gold is already paint, thus you need not do any prep on it as paint sticks great to paint. No need to sand or prime in fact. Use masking tape and tape off the chrome area. Buy a good brand name gloss or flat black (your preference) and start early in the day. Every hour go out and lay down a coat. Put as many coats on as you desire. Let dry overnight then peel off the masking tape. Looks like factory and has not chipped at all. Just remember when spraying the coats you'll have to aim at different angles to get front and back of honeycomb. Just a suggestion, but very doable.
but i got a good deal on a black grill off another f-150. was worried about painting it either way. arizona sand would tear it up pretty quick, most cars windshields i have here already look sandblasted. thanks for the info though

You're probably better off as buying the paint would match the cost of your good deal. I hope someone can advise you on the proper way to pop the grill off the chrome frame. Maybe do a search on this forum. I'm also an Arizonan, Tucson, but my grill has held up thus far. Good luck.
