I finally got my build sheet from ford. This truck is very special to me because it has always been in my family. How many people can say they have the truck they learned how to drive in growing up. I'm 43 and my dad purchased this truck in 1971. It's a 1971 ford f-100 long bed. I remember the day he brought it home. My father is no longer with us but I will always have alot of fond memories with Dad in that truck. Like the time I stopped to let him out to open a gate. When I pulled thru he hopped on the tailgate and said go. So I popped the clutch and he came off! I think it was a while before I drove that truck again. But the reason I got the original spec sheet was to know what kind of gearing it had. The transmission was a new process 435 4 speed with a 3.50 non-locking rear axle. The engine was a 360. I would like to do some work on the engine and body if I ever get the funds. The engine only has 54,500 orginal miles on it. But it was a farm truck and just drove on the farm. I get around 13 miles per gallon on gas. Thinking about building the engine to a 390. Is this a good idea? Would the milage be worse? I'm just going to use it for hauling and pulling a trailer. Would like to give it more pulling power. Suggestions!
if all u want is pulling power throw a 300 strait six,u could haul a house, lol,my 1993 f-150 has one and well with the 5 speed she gets around 20 mpg's,but of course i did a few mods, lol, like sny one in my position,i got around 165 mpg's pulling a car trailer with a 89' conv. van on it,it was fun,but definently go for the 300 if u want good mpg's and torque.... HP means nothing when pullin a trailer....ur engine could have 300 HP but not have the go-nads to pull anything.just my opinion

Cuz, you bees welcome to your opinion. A lot of guys like the I-6 and you might compare it to a 302, but when you throw a FE in the fray, U loose hands down. 165 mpg is a little strong, don't U think.
Larry, I got my dads 66, had it for over 20 years, and my second son did a 4 corner trash job to it one night going back to college. I rebuilt the engine and it lives on today in another 66.
