OK. a few days ago i cut off my exhaust up to the cat cause it was pretty much rusted out, but now its loud enough to hear the engine and its making a sound. if im doing like 100 km/h and let up on the gas all the way the exhaust souds like it rumbles, like it backfire a bunch. my truck is a '91 f-150 2wd 5.0l efi that dosent run too bad except at idle or very low throttle were it gives a little shutter every once and a while. im just worried if it'll get worse or if its something to be worried about.
You say you cut the exhaust up to the catalytic converter? Then, look inside the cat and make sure that its not clogged. If you use a low grade fuel, then it probably is. The water leaking out through the exhaust mixes with the gases and creates a soot similar to what you find in a fireplace chimney. If the cat is clogged, then it won't be able to provide the back pressure needed. I am not condoning this, but you could always lose the cat and see if it fixes your problem.
I'm assuming you're saying that you removed the exhaust from the cat backwards. If this is so then you also removed your muffler. When you remove a muffler you will hear loud and backfire sounding noises. It's the sound of your engine burning gas. This noise is going on all the time inside your exhaust but you don't hear it because your muffler muffles (dampens) the noise. That's it's job. So nothing to be worried about there. I have a buddy that had a clogged cat so he cut it out for the time being and it is now very loud and runs better. His was so clogged that it forced an exhaust leak and he had no power. And like 302V8 says, while you're there check the cat for clogging. If it's not clogged and your truck runs poorly at low idle then tune it up. That might be all you need.
