I tow a TT behind my PSD. A tow behind not fifth wheel..
With the stock tail gate I know I catch a lot of wind, wouldn't a louvered tail gate end this wind problem ?? And allow for possibly better mileage ??
I know it's been hashed and re hashed but towing a trailer is different.
Thanks.
Tom and Ray, the car guys on PBS recently researched this. It turns out Ford does a lot of wind tunnel work at Lockheed-Martin. What has been discovered is that the tail gate creates a "dead zone" of air within the bed. Thus a stock tailgate has less drag than a louvered or no tailgate at all. The least drag situation is a stock tailgate with a bed cover.
All well and good. But the resistance caused by the travel trailer the winds got to go somewhere. And I've noticed it comes back in the bed and blows trash around. The test evidently weren't done with a trailer.
And I've driven enough with my tale gate down.
