I am thinking about buying a preformance exhaust system for my 97 ford explorer. Has anyone bought an exhaust system for a 4.0L V6 SOHC on a 97 4 door explorer?
Is there much benefit in HP.... or does it sound good?

I anxiously await some input on this also, especially whether to go dual the whole way back or just increase diameter or what. I am considering the same type of "upgrade."
I am sure there has to be some kind of noticable difference in power, especially if I upgraded the air intake. But I am wondering if you can get a good deep rumble tone from a V6?
I put a Gibson cat- back exhaust on my 92 XLT. No impact on gas mileage, pickup is slightly improved. But has a deep throaty tone. Has character but you can carry on a conversation without yelling. $280 for system - 1 hour labor charge to have installed.
yeah, I put a gibson kit on myself on my 1991 XLT as well. It is easy to do yourself and the kit is heavy duty and makes it sound real nice and throaty. I picked the gibson kit over the flowmaster kit due to the fact that the flowmaster kit is 2.25" diameter where the gibson is 2.5". You also get a nice polished stainless 3" tip with the Gibson kit.
I put a glasspack on my '92 Explorer (daily driver). It sounds good, and resulted in a nice performance boost over the stock muffler and resonator. As long as you dont touch the cat converter any exhaust shop should have no problem making a tailpipe w/o the resonator.
So far it's been a year and 1/2 with the glasspack and it still works good, so dont tell me its gonna blow out!
