Howdy all. Just installed a larger turbine housing, 3" outlet and downpipe on my 94 Factory turboed 7.3. My question is in the installation directions from ATS, they say to back off the torque screw three turns, which I did. But, what exactly does that do? After turning the screw, I noticed a bit more power, but she starts a little rougher in the morning. My exhaust temp also stays about the same after turning it. Just curious about what it does. Also, after this little project, my boost pressure went from 4-5 max. to 10-11 max. psi. Should I take her down a bit?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
By the way, after installing this kit, I left my buddy's 97 P-stroke eatin' dust.
I replaced all 8 injectors about 5000 miles ago. IP has 136,000 miles. The screw that I backed off is behind the IP that has a cap over it and angled at 45 degrees. It also has a 3/8 lock nut to keep it in place. After the downpipe, I have 3 1/2 inch pipe all the way back w/ no muffler. Thanks for the advice. I was kinda worried when I hit 11 psi.
What do you think would be a good next mod to do on my truck?
Your next area to improve is the air intake snorkel. I can not remember real good, but don't you have a flat little snorkel over the battery? That makes the turbo have to work to hard for air.
This is what I did on my 86.
My original snorkel hooked up to the little hole behind the turn signal light.
This was a couple of hours removing the radiator support and rigging a new support.
Then a couple of more hours with a pop rivit gun and metal tongs to fabricate the air snorkel. Nice improvement to high RPM resopnsiveness and more top end torque. I also notice about 4 PSI boost pressure at 70 MPH going down hill with my foot off the throttle, this has to be from the ram air effect. In case you are wondering, I have a new 7.3 with an ATS turbo with 3" downpipe and dual 3" stacks in my 86 with full guages. The only down side with the air intake is snow. Driving in a hard snow storm or plowing snow allows enough into the air cleaner to block the filter. So when I am in those conditions I have to unhook the flex duct from the air box. But then, who needs ram air and loads of power in a snow storm?
Thanks for the advice. Looks like you done a mighty fine job there. My intake is a flat little snorkel over the battery. Just might have to rig something up like yours, but I've got very limited space in there. I've noticed a little increase in exhaust temps. Would a new intake help that out any?
Also considering an intercooler maybe.
Anyway, thanks for the pic Dave.
