I have a 71' F100 4x4 and I installed power steering from a 76' F100 4x4. Recently the gear box has been getting sloppy and when I hit sudden high rpms the steering wheel locks up. Is there a company that sells rebuild kits for the 76' 4x4 gear box? Also is the 2wd and 4wd gear box the same? And one more question....Can I adapt the newer power steering pump from a late 70's to 80's model 4x4 to fit my gear box I have the 390 FE engine . I was told that I could get one from an 80's model 4x4 or van .But I looked at them and the brackets are different. Can someone steer me in the right direction? ALL help much appreciated.
Installed pwr steering on my '72 a few mo back, and from what i've been told and read, the 2 & 4 wheel boxes are different, most notably the bolt arrangement. Also someone said the 4 wheel box is stronger, but most say the 2 wheel has given them no problems. I bought rebuilt box from Carq**st, for about $160. Heard rebuilding one yourself is no fun, and dont know what a kit would cost.
Thanks I hope I can find one in a wrecking yard If not then i will have to go to the auto parts store. I was just hoping someone would know if a one ton 4wd box would adapt well.

On my 72 4x4, the power steering box is mounted on the outside of the frame as opposed to the inside of the frame like my old 4x2 had. Mine also uses a u-joint at the box instead of a rag joint.
