Here's something that I would like everyones opinion on. I have 4:56.1 gears with lockers and am looking for a way to get more power to turn bigger meats than 35 inchers. In your opinion what would you do? Install a bigger motor, or get an Atlas II with the 4:33 gear ratio and do minor upgrades to the 302? Right now I'm torn between the two, so let me know what you think, or past experiences you might have in either area. Thanks..

Sorry about that.....I haven't been able to type real well cause of a finger being hurt, I've seen it a couple of times. I'd say change gearing if you don't have the money for a motor. If you want more power on the highway, then the T-case won't help you until you get into 4 low.
Even better, just do both.
hehe, thanks guys. I was messing around with my avatar for the last couple posts trying to see if I could get it to display right. I had to write something
I'm not to worried about highway speed so I think I'm leaning along the lines of gearing. I talked with a Rep at Advanced adapters and he said if I went with an atlas II my end crawl ratio would end up around 52:1. After he told me that I was kind of sold. I'm thinking I'll go that route first and then upgrade my tranny a bit and then tinker with my motor. I think with that low of a ratio that I wont need to worry about whether or not I have enough horsepower. The end result should be the same. Thanks for the input guys.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-May-02 AT 08:36 AM (EST)]I remember seeing an article in Fourwheeler about mating two transfer cases together to get even lower gearing. Rock crawlers do this type of thing all the time. I just don't remember what issue it was in thought. They have a web site www.fourwheeler.com, go figure right.
I was just looking at a Fourwheeler mag and saw this you might be interested. The editor was answering a question and this was in his answer. "Then, install either a 4:1 T-case reduction kit from Advance Adapters, a 4.7 Marlin Crawler (Marlin's Automotive, 209/252-7295) low range kit, or one of the kits that allow the usage of two tranfer cases in tandem." The person who asked the original question owned a Toyota but I don't think that matters. Call Advance Adapters as well they might have more alternatives (805/238-7000, www.advanceadapters.com).
