from the pict of ffr block there are no numbers where his are located..
The date code I did find but I can not read the first number from the ground in crud I took a wire brush to it and still can not read it. It looks to me that someone has pieced this thing together from all of the numbers that are on it. but I am thinking maybe they started with something good maybe?

Even Ford used several different parts in motor builds. Depending on what they wanted for target HP. There are so many FE parts on the shelves to choose from made it easy to interchange the parts. Crankshafts, Heads, Intakes, on and on the list went. I looked at my first FE motor and though it was a freak build at first with all the different years that parts were put out.

Ford often used parts that were excess from the shelf of the prior years. So you might have a 68 block with 66 or 67 year heads. Even intakes or Cranks. They pieced them together with out much care about year as long as they could hit target hp.

Orange....sorry i don't have any pictures of my blocks on here. Perhaps you have confused me with another member. That would explain your "looks just like your block" comment. Sorry I didn't understand and where is that pic your looking at? There is a good chance the first digit of the date code was removed for some reason. I've seen this on blocks that have been machined wrong or flawed. I had a 428 service block that was the same way with rubbed out date code. The first number was ground off. One lifter hole had been sleeved at the factory due to lifter hole out of spec I'd guess. Anyway Ford would rub out the date code and put the block aside. Then later repair the block and use in production or sell over the counter. I'm positive this was done at the factory as the block came in the Ford box, wrapped and cosmiline. Being most engines have parts within a three month period of each other Ford removed the date code, repaired and resold. Either that or the block was once sold and the seller may have removed the numbers to pass it off as something it was not. There were some blocks that had no casting number. Can't remember but think they were 390's but i'll need to verify that. Does the block look ground down where the casting code would be? G.

One other thing you have to realize is that in the production of a motor, each part has not been engineered at the same time - some parts were engineered for the '65 model year that were put on a '68 360 - so you'll see parts with C5 on them, C6, C7, C8, anything up to the year the motor was built. For instance, I have a '67 390 in the garage. It has C7 heads, C6 rods, and something was a C3 I think, parts ranging from 1963 through 1967.

I bought a speedo gear for my '96 t-bird after changing to a 3.73 rear gear - one of the choices had a B9 part number. Yes, 1959! I think it was for an AOD-equipped early 90's t-bird or mustang, but it would work for something made in the '90's.

So, looking at any Ford motor, you'll see parts with all different years, and so it looks like a "mutt".

My 390 has it's block #'s on the opposite side of the oil filter, the right side. It's upside down towards the front, even with the frost plugs.

ffr I think that the date code has the 2 dots and it is a 8 or 9 k7 with the wi above it.

what does that mean?

Well the two dots represents a 70's casting. There was no better way to move to the next decade so the dots were added to keep things simple. 78 or 79 block but I'm not sure about the 79. That is I'm not exactly sure how late service blocks were being cast but think still available in 79. Someone please confirm this though. Anyway with the 8- 78/Oct/7th and the 9 the same except 79 instead of 78. Date decoding is easy. The first digit is the last digit of the year cast. The next letter is the month. A-M (with I being skipped as it resembled a 1... LOL) starting with Jan for A and so on. The last number/s the day of the month part was cast. Keeping in mind the two dots for the 70's blocks and 60's without the dots. Some people miss that I is not used when decoding Ford stuff anyway and see a M date code as the 13th month????? LOL. I'll look into the WI you describe as nothing enters mind on that. Not that there is much in there anyway (my mind that is). G.
