i have a 86 b2 with AT and 1990 2.9 that seems to run fine in town...but as soon as i get on the hwy and hit 60-65 mph it starts to lose power..acting like it is not getting enuff fuel...and when i jump on the throttle it lunges forward..i have not changed the fuel filter for quite some time and was wondering if this might be the problem?
any ideas as to what might be wrong
fuel filter could be a problem. Even if it isn't, and it's been a long time since it was last changed, you might change it as a matter of maintenance.
There are other possibilities, too. Especially on an '86 (which doesn't have a functional check engine light), the best first thing to do is to pull any codes from the computer. Only requires a paper clip and a cheap voltmeter or test light. Ken00 has posted a good set of instructions for the EEC-IV self-tests in his tech info post.
If you have a fuel pressure gauge, it could be useful to check the fuel pressure as well.
