The fuel pump in my rear tank was straining and not providing enough fuel to maintain 55mph on level ground so I pulled it out to chec the strainer, all looked OK so I reinstalled it and tried it- a little bertter, then it totally died! So I need a new one, but don't want to pay dealer prices.
Also- do both tanks use the same fuel filter? And how can I change the fuel filter- I couldn't figure out how to get the connections apart (the one inside the frame just behind the cab)
The ford in-tank pumps can be purchased from Ford, Napa, Autozone, just about anywhere.
I got my last one at my local service station, who gets a 29% discount from Ford, so I got a better price on the official ford part, which for certain things, I like to do. I'm friends with the guy and buy all my gas there for my dual-tank truck so they adore me.
Both tanks should share an in-line filter which is along the frame rail, and while they say you need a special tool to remove it, you can do it without the tool. I use an old screwdriver that I dipped the tip and shank into a rubberized compound "tool grip" just for things like this that I want to pry without damaging. A thin heavy piece of plastic works also. Most of the time you can just pry them apart with your fingers, but wear gloves.
Even if you get the correct tool to pop the lines off the fuel filter, sometimes the lines are really stuck fast on the ends of the filter. Don't be surprised if It takes a little bit of persuasion to pop an old filter out. I ran into the same problem when disconnecting the fuel line and return to the engine, the springlocks just seize up after so much time and are initially difficult to separate.
