Ok I have been sent to the gurus of the 351m. I have a 198f250 2 wheel drive the motor is getting tired. so should I go to a 400 or find someone to help me rebuild my 351m. I know that the C6 tranny will bolt up to it. but what about everything else. is this going to turn into a nightmare if I decide to chang. I don't need rip your head of power but i do take it into some pretty hairy places and would like a little snort. also is there a way to put dual exhaust on the 351 i cant seem to finde headers. A neigbor said just cut the existing pipes and weld my own pipes on. what does everyone think. It does not need to pass emsions in minnesota. thanks
The 400 and 351M are exactly the same on the outside. The ONLY differences in these engines is the pistons, crankshaft and harmonic balancer. If you are rebuilding the engine, you can use your engine as the basis and find a 400 Crankshaft and harmonic balancer. If you are doing a complete overhaul, you will need to bore and replace pistons anyway, so that expense will be the same. Also if you were to keep the 351M configuration you would be turning the 351 crankshaft, most likely, so buying a turned 400 crank will not add that much to the expense.
If you want to add some power and efficiency to the engine, consider using flat top pistons available from Badger for the rebuild.
When I built my 351M into a 400, the only additiontal charge I had was $100 for the 400 crank. It's worth doing. You should be able to find headers. Check out Hedman, Dynomax, Flowtech, Holley.
I didn't really understand what year model your truck was. But I did the same thing that you are wanting to do, I built my 351M into a 400 and put Dynomax Headers on it. It is in a 1978 F150 2x4. I got the Dynomax headers from Jeg's for $105
EDIT>>>
Oh, 1980, I see it now. Sorry, I was looking at your post, not your name. Yes, I think that Jeg's also carries Dynomax headers for this year model.
