Is that tranny a E4OD? If it is you might check for codes. My E4OD was shifting hard and sometimes delayed. I found a got a computer code that pionted to the MLPS (Manual Lever Position Sensor). The sensor is located on the drivers side of the tranny and has two bolts holding it in places, One wire harness. My Sensor had a coroded wire, cleaned that and all was well for Six months. I finally replaced it about 9 months ago. They are fairly easy to replace and not to expensive. I got mine from Ford and it was a new design which ment I had to rewire(Not Hard at all)the plug. To re-wire it is simple the change is the shape of the plug, so the wires go back in the same location. Two bolts and adjust. It took about 30min to do. There is a trick to adjusting the sensor, The Tranny Tech at Ford told me not to worry about the special tool, but to line the mark on the center(Which pivots) with the line on the main body of the sensor. He said if I did that I would be fine and would not even notice. So I did, has been fine since. Sorry about the lengthy response I just figured if it is the MLPS then yuo are already ahead of the game. Good luck and I hope this helps. I beleive the code was 636, That is just from memory though.
It is around $100.00 or so. I figured it was cheaper than a re-build. I beleive you can get the part at other part stores too. I just chose to go with Ford since I know then well. I have seen it a CHeckers, Schucks, Kragen parts site. Do check for codes first, it could be any of the 4 sensors.
