Tranny advice needed.

Greetings,
For my 1960 F100 I am considering the purchase of a new crate motor from Ford. I am looking at the 240HP 351 M-6007-J58 engine.

My questions.
1. I assume this is a new production line engine but it does not specifically state it on the fordracingparts web site. Would this be a Windsor or Cleveland setup? I am just wondering about clearances. I am setup for a 302 but figure this 351 may be a better swap.

2. I currently have a C4 transmission. I do not know how to ID what year the transmission is from. Can someone point me to the right location to look on the tranny for numbers and where I can look up the meaning of the numbers?

3. I know the trannies changed a lot and was told that older model transmissions do not always work well with newer motors so I will need to know what will be an appropriate match. The tranny I have now was slipping pretty badly in reverse and in drive when it was cold. I have done no troubleshooting on it as it was only driven a couple times before being parked and having the 6 cylinder motor pulled.

I assume I will need to replace the transmission. I do not have the experience to rebuild and even though I could figure it out I do not have a good workspace for something like that. Working on the engine in my garage is one thing but spreading out so many little parts for the transmission is another. The kids use my tiny little workspace as their main entrance/exit from the house. I figure it will be safer to replace the transmission unless I find some minor issue with it like a clogged filter or low tranny fluid and it is still usable. In the event I cannot use it though I need to figure out what replacement will work. I have looked at the C4s on SummitRacing but they do not indicate model years they are appropriate for and I do not know how to tell myself.

The truck has a 9" rear end (do not know the gearing but if you can tell me how to find/figure I would appreciate that too), a C4 automatic with a floor shift and I installed motor mounts for a 302. I have bolted a 302 in place but it was not running. I have two 302 motors, one from an 85 Crown Vic and one from an 83 Mustang but they are both tired. I would rather go with something new at this point and then be able to concentrate on the rest of the truck without worrying about engine/transmission but even without going for high performance the cost is going to just about eat up all available funds for the next 6 months.

well, the 351w has the same bellhousing as the 302, but the 351m is the same as the 370 series. You can identify a c4 by the pan bolts, the c4 has 11, with a square pan, and the c6 has a l shaped pan with 17 bolts, if you need more identification info go here:
