Timing, starting from scratch.

I am replacing the intake, carb, and ignition system on my truck, and goofed up, (cranked the motor over with the old distributor out).
I was wanting to make sure I do this correctly the first time.
1. Set cyl 1 at 10 degree btdc compression stroke.
2. Install distributor so the (stator contact)? is pointed at cyl one plug wire.
3. Set timing as usual.

How can I tell if the oil pump shaft is engaged properly?
Are there any pitfalls I should watch out for?
Thanks for your help.

It sounds like you have a good handle on the situation. Just make sure that you are on the compression stroke. The distributor will not drop all the way down if it does not engage the oil pump shaft. My son did this on his S-10 and only grabbed the tip of the shaft. The engine ran with oil pressure, but once he got it up to 2000 rpms, his oil pressure dropped. You could see where the tip of the oil pump shaft was worn and would not turn the oil pump at the higher rpms. We simply dropped the distributor back in, seated it properly and it worked fine.

Get a drill with a socket that fits the oil pump rod and look down where the dristrubuter(sp?) goes and you should see the oil rod put the socket on it and drill in reverse have someone else watch your oil pressure gauge it should move.
