Yellow light? That would be your check engine light. It means that the engine management computer has detected a fault and wants you to look into the problem. Correct procedure is to read the trouble codes from the computer and go from there. What year/engine is your Explorer?

mr shorty thanks

i have the 4.0l model 1997/8 and its a pictire of an engine or outline is more accurate and if it is the comp picking up on a fault ,could it be also ready for a service as i have been told this also causes the light to come on ..if so does it have to go back into dealer or can i do it myself someone told me that it resets itself after 14 days if you self service ..is this correct

I have not heard of Ford putting "timers" like that on Explorers to get you into the shop for maintenance. From what I've heard, if you have a check engine light, then the computer is actually seeing a problem. The only way to know what problem the computer is seeing is to pull codes from the computer.

mrshorty thanks again

i know it may sound stupid to you but how do i get the codes from the computer if i knew the problem i may be able to fix it/ in my earlier posts i have mentioned the death rattle or so one of the forum members called it they said it was the cam chain adjuster mechanism but i was under the assumption that the explorer i had was overhead cam and had a cam belt not a chain and the 'rattle seems to be eminating from the middle of the block under the auto choke gear in the middle of the 2 banks i could be wrong but the rattle seems constant and does not increase in speed with the engine rpm your thoughts would be appreciated my friend as i am at a loose end . its such a dream to drive but for the annoying ,rattle, and now the engine light thanks again for your time.

Given the model Explorer you have, you'll need an OBD II code reader to pull the codes. Not sure how it is in England, but in the US many of the car parts stores will pull the codes for you in hopes that you'll buy the repair parts there. You can buy the code reader at a parts store or from several places online (Like at Harbor Freight). Regarding the timing mechanism, I'm pretty sure that all of the Explorer engines have a chain, none have a belt.

The 4.0 SOHC engine of that era is known for problems with the cam chain guides causing rattles. I can't remember the specifics, but a Ford dealership should be able to tell you about it, or someone here with the SOHC.
