I'm doing an 88 S/D efi swap in a older carb truck. I'd like to ask the guys that actually installed performance cams in their speed density efi's. Can you please tell me what camshaft you used and what type of results did you get? I'm looking for a cam with really good low to med. torque for towing. I've gotten alot of suggestions and horror stories about perf. cams and S/Ds, (within my hometown) but non ever did the actual installation. I don't have the funds to go mass-air just yet. thanks for any replies
Well, I have seen a S/D Mustang with a B303 FMS cam and it ran like crap. Bad idle, lean backfiring thru the intake. I would go to CompCams website and see what they offer. They actually have a cam recommendation form that you can fill out all of the info and they will recommend the perfect cam for your application.
I think as long as you stay with the 114 115 lobe center you will be fine, i installed a custom ground cam 115 lobe separation, .448-268 intake, 458-276 exhaust gave me lots of torque, feels stock, not lumpy and with alot of power, there are cam manufacturers that have something similar to that, i installed this on a 95 f4te block, roller engine, the only problem is that roller cams are expensive, but was worth it, felt a great difference, i also installed stamped steel roller rockers.
I installed a stock 351 EFI cam in my old 302. It's a pretty mild cam. It sucked. To get it running half way decent I used a 351 PCM too.
I also put dual exhaust on it. It idled rough, surged at low speeds and got bad gas mileage. The midrange and top end power were better than stock but not much.
It was an experiment and wasn't worth it.
thanks for the reply C/foam, did you install this on a 94 MAP or MAF? Also, what brand cam did you use? I'm very intrested in your results! Did U have to up-grade to a higher injector?
i installed it on a 93 351 map speed density, i had it custom ground at crower cams, also installed shorty headers did some porting on the heads, but the rest was stock, the cam no. is E55037 ford 5.8 special, if you have a regular cam it will be cheaper to purchase or reground yours, look around, as long as you keep it in the range of the lobe separation around 115 this should keep it in the stock feel, Iwas told that this cam spec was something around what lightnings have.

Reason: adding
I called crane cams and they have on with 109 lobe sep. I asked them why so low but the tech said because it doesn't have a drastic lift, it didn't need the higher lobe sep. the lift was 416 Intake, 432 exh.,...do you think this to mild for towing??
