Too Slow....

Hey everyone, I am new to the site and am totally frazzled because I have got geo metro's passing me up on the onramp. I drive a 2000 e150. The van has a 4.2efi v-6.

Is there any hope for me in regards to more horsepower? Do I need a v-8?, A hi performance tranny? I'll take whatever I can get. I had dual exhaust installed, but now I am just loud and slow. Please help me!!!

don't take this the wrong way but you bought a van, and a v-6 at that, if you wanted fast should have bought a Mustang.

aside from that you may want to have your tranny check to see if there is a problem with it.

IMO - Yep. I'm afraid there ain't no substitute for cubic inches... and for the amount of money you would have to spend to get the V6 to make power, you may as well just sell it and buy a van with a V8.

I'm in a similar situation with my '90 E-150. The stock 5.0 drivetrain is simply not enough to do what I need the van to do (heavy cargo and towing). I toyed with upgrading the engine (considering there is a wealth of hi-po parts for the 5.0), but in the end decided that no matter how much power the engine put out, it wouldn't help the transmission, axle, suspension, brakes and the basic 1/2 ton frame of the van: I simply need a heavier duty van or truck.

For what it's worth, when my van is unloaded (but it still has a relatively heavy raised roof conversion, w/o rear seats), it's fairly capable of getting out its own way. If you put the go-pedal to the floor, it'll move. It won't like it (lot's of noise), but it will out accelerate most stock econoboxes.

I have a 4.9 pulling my E-150 Hi-top conversion van around. I am quite happy with it as far as power and speed. I don't tow with it, but for general use, it keeps me happy. Of course, it's a van, and nothing like my 5.0 Mustang. If I want speed and power, I jump in the Mustang.

Road trips are comfortable and easy. It handles good at high speed, but would appreciate better gas mileage.

Wink Thanks

Thanks group for the input I appreciate the responses. It is not that I want a "racing-van." I just need a "wee-bit" more than what I've got. However,(looking on the bright side) the posts confirm my reasons for looking for a new van. This is more ammunition in my favor, towards the upcoming argument with my wife regarding the issue. I just need to exlain to her the importance of a
V-10! LOL....

think about the diesel for your van, good power and tow and better mileage.

How many miles? Last oil change? Is the tranny fluid good in color? The few 4.2s I've driven had about as much power as a 302 in the van... We have an '04 with a 4.6 and couldn't be happier.... We also have an '88 with a 302, it will move empty, but loaded with a trailer... Semis go around you on the freeway....... MY '92 with a 351 would hold it's own though... I just do a GOOD complete tune-up, and put the factory exhaust back on.
