Squeeky steering

I recently noticed a rather annoying squeek from the front end of my truck whenever I turn or go over a bump. Other then the noise I have not noticed any other problems so my question is does this seem like a problem that would require action right now? My truck is a 2WD, 2000 Ranger with just over 30k miles on it. Any help or ideas is appreciated, I just hate to go to a shop without having a least some clue what the problem might be before hand.

Thank you.

does the sound get worse turning the wheel when it's stopped? is it a short squeek or a whining sound? I'm no expert, but I get a whining-ish sound when the powersteering fluid needs replacing. -M

Ok, some stuff I didn't mention in my original post. It is not a power steering problem, it is definately a suspension problem of some sort. The sound is like the sound of someone jumping on an old spring mattress. It is from on the front drivers side and it comes in anytime my truck goes over a bump and also when I steer. I figured it could be a problem with my coil spring but visually I cannot see anything wrong with it, I don't think it could be my shocks but I looked at it anyways and it seems ok. Right now my thoughts are that it is either my upper control arm or lower control arm, although the fact that I get the sound when I steer also makes me think maybe it is one of the ball joints. Anyone have any ideas how I could pinpoint the bad part or has anyone had a similar problem? Also, could it still be a problem with the coil spring even if it shows no apparent visible damage and how serious of a problem would this be if it does end up being from a ball joint or one of the control arms? Thanks

Tie Rod End

Check your tie rod ends. Sounds EXACTLY like what happened with my 98 Mustang GT.

Remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle and try to move it. If gritty and stiff it is time to replace.

Raise the front end and check for play by moving the wheels up and down, side to side.

Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks, I got the problem fixed. It ended up being a ball-joint on the lower control arm. I check the tie rod first and even though that wasn't it I realized that the problem was my lower ball-joint. Anyways I also read a past post about a guy who replaced his lower ball-joint even though the manual says you have to replace to whole control arm. Thanks for all the help, it ended up costing me only $15 dollars, which is definately cheaper then if I took it to a shop. Just a cool note, I learned today you can borrow tools from autozone for free, you just have to pay for it and when you are done return it for all your money back. Good thing for me since I don't think I'd want to buy a ball joint press. Well I am sure most of you already know about borrowing tools for free but just thought I'd pass it along in case you didn't know.
