i have an 88 f150 4x4 w/ 5 speed that i bought with 132,000 miles on it. the check engine light comes on only after it warmed up, maybe 20 miles. so i brought it to a buddies shop to pull the codes. the codes were 33, and 41. one was o2 lean, other was egr flow low. he said it could be either that were the problem. well anyway i also have an 88 2x4 302 auto for parts. so i robbed the o2 off of that. he said with his experience if the plug ins are the same its the same o2 sensor. i installed the other sensor and drove around a while to notice a back fire through the intake and a loss of power on hills and weak acceleration. but no check engine light.
so i checked the timing. with spout unpluged 10 degrees btdc, it was at 15 btdc. i backed it down to 10 to only make it worse. does any one think what im thinking that the o2 senso is the wrong one?
Did you clear the codes before putting in the other O2 sensor. If you did I would check for new codes again. It may be possible that the O2 sensor you grabbed is either bad or incorrect. I would start with getting a new O2 Sensor clear the codes and then reset the timing. Maybe if you start back at the begging it will be easier.
Good Luck

This may be a dumb question, but...How do you reset the timing on fuel injection? I just did a tune up (new plugs (motorcraft plat.), wires, cap, and rotor, all Borg-Warner)on my new (to me) 96 F150/302 and I can't tell yet but I think I have a light pinging situation during accelaration. (My first EFI truck, so I'm learning).
You reset the ignition timing. The 302 still has a distributor cap and rotor so the timing can still be adjusted like on an older engine. You need to make sure when checking the base timing that the SPOUT is disconnected.
