Rear wheel bearings.

98 F150 XLT 4.2L shrt box, extcab. auto. 2x4.

How do you know when the wheel bearings are done?

How hard are they to change?

Do you have to get a shop to do it?

What kind of price are they?

Thanks.

I assume you mean the front ones. When you hear them. To test them, lift a wheel off the ground and wiggle the tire. Put one hand on the bottom, one on the time and push top, pull bottom, and vice versa. Not real hard, you're not looking for ball joint problems, just about 1/2 again as much as it would take to pick up the wheel. If you feel more than maybe 1/8" of rock in the center of the wheel, the bearings are loose or shot. Then spin the wheel. If you can't distinguish bearing noise from brake caliper noise, gently pry the pads back away from the rotor or pull the pads. I can't describe it but you'll know from the grind sound if they're bad.

If loose, just pop the center cap off, pop the bearing cover, take the cotter pin out, tighten castle nut firmly, then back off until it spins freely. If any rock (1st test) tighten with your fingers until gone. Replace cotter pin (book says use new one) and put bearing cap back on, center cap and go.

To replace, you'll have to push the races out. If you've never seen it done, find someone to help the first time.

Are you getting noise or something that makes you think the rear wheel bearings are shot? Quite often the first thing you'll notice is a wheel seal leak because the axle is moving up and down enough that the seal leaks.
They can also make noise. Usually a low rumbling sorta noise that get's louder as you go faster and it doesn't change when you're on or off the throttle.
Quite often if the bearing is toast so is the axle
You need a puller to remove them. I don't know how much it would cost.
