I do see an advantage of the thumbtack over my mark on the tire sidewall.....I believe that the thumbtack would provide a more accurate measurement since the tape measure would be mostly straight the the tip of the thumbtack as opposed to curved at the measurement point like the mark. I might hafta try that next alignment.

I was kind of intrigued by your Sharpie mark. As long as you can see it and have a nice sharp indication to measure from it would be quicker and easier than the thumbtacks. I'm going to try it next time.
