cutting hole for shifter

i need to know about cutting the hole for the floor shifter i bought it is a standard linkage type but it seems there is not enough room between the transmission tunnel and the top of the trans about 2'' not enough but if i mount it to one side of the trans it looks out of place and is in a bad spot whats the best way to do this.

Is this a 3spd shifter? the 3 spd shifters need to be on the side of the transmission.
