Starting Problems - Can you help me?

I am hoping somebody will know what I am talking about. I have a 2001 F-150 5.4 triton with 70k. About six months ago we straight piped it out the back by simply removing the muffler and replacing it with a section of exhaust pipe.
Over the last three weeks or so, I will have trouble starting the engine. It only happens about every other time but is getting progressively worse. The engine turns but it doesn't catch and sometimes when it actually engages, it will act like its wheezing up just to idle.
Once the engine is running, there is no trouble whatsoever. Its only in the process of starting but it is getting worse every time.
What do you say?

Thanks, J.C.

The same happened to me, but only in the extreme cold. We just went through some 0 degree days and below 0 degree days. It gave me a bit of trouble starting. I contribute it to the cold and the K&N filter. It was probably sucking too much air. My wifes Trailblazer also gave a bit of trouble, so I was not too concerned.
