Engine stall when first taking off!

Help! I have a 83 F150w/ 351 three speed. The engine is running well
but there is a slight hesitation when attempting to accelerate from a dead stop. It happens when the enigne is cold/warm or basically all the time, but only when totally stopped. Acceleration while already moving (above 10mph) is not a problem. The carb is a VV(nightmare). The truck only has 80,000 original miles. I thought it might be the CATS but I've taken care of that problem if you get my drift . Since it has a TFI-IV ignition, all the manuals I've checked say that the timing is not adjustable? Whats up with that? Anyway, one thing at a time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks..

There should be a base timing number on the radiator tag. You usually have to unplug a connector (spout) to take control away from the computer long enough for you to set it. See if it says anything on the sticker on the radiator support.

Franklin2,
Thanks for the info. Any idea where this connector you are speaking of is? Once the connector you speak of is disconnected, would you set the timing in the normal fashion after that?

Thanks

Engine stall when first taking off!

This sounds like the same thing that is happening to my 84 351w with an edelbrock carb. I have been told it is the accelerator pump but I have yet to be able to find one of these. I replaced the ignition system with an MSD system and that didn't make a difference. Tell me if you figure it out please. Thanks and goodluck

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-May-02 AT 04:09 PM (EST)]The dist should have a bunch of wires going to it. Most of them will be grouped together in one large plug. There will be one wire with a disconnect plug all by itself going to the dist. This should be the spout connector that you will disconnect. And yes after that, you set the timing conventionally by loosening the dist and using a timing light.

Yes, this problem can also be caused by a bad accelerator pump. But timing and sparkplug issues can cause it as well, and checking/setting the timing is a freebie. It's really going to be a process of elimination to find the problem.

If you want a quick test to see if your accelerator pump is working or not, take the aircleaner off and with the engine off, and looking down the carb throat, push the throttle linkage to wide open. You should see two strong streams of gas shooting into the carb. If you get weak dribbles or nothing at all, this would indicate a bad accelerator pump

Engine stall when first taking off!

Frankiln2,
Hey man thanks for the hook up. I'm going to try your suggestions when I get home. I can't imagine the problem being the accelerator pump. I've seen those two strong streams of fuel in the throat. Actually, that is one of the things I checked from the get get go. I also changed the fuel filter and blew out the fuel line from the carb all the way to the tank(s). Trust me, I 've pretty much eliminated the fuel system and all its components.
I think that maybe adjusting the timing will help even things out. I'll be sure to give you the update to see if it works. Once again, thanks

Johnny
