Question toyota tercell

What is with those old toyota quality adds? My brother has a 1985 Tercell and it has the cheapest interior I have ever seen and they can not be that very safe of cars because there is nothing to that car besides plastic fordguy101

ok what is the point of your post exactly? I for about a year I drove a '88 Toyota Tercel Hatchback. It had a 4-speed manual and Carbed 1.5L 3-valve. I gotta tell you it was a tank! I thrashed and bashed it every day i drove it. Yet it still got good mileage and started right up every dang time no matter what. Ran some carb cleaner through it and changed too high mileage oil and it just got even better. Seemed too run better the more and more i drove it. Only problem it ever had was a broken belt that was easily replaced. Though I agrea the interior and body were ugly as sin....but it was a damn good car.

Every old toyota that I was ever in or drove was great-- sure they have cheap interiors, so did most Gm and all Dodge at the time. But, None of those would go the miles a Toyota did. I got nearly a half million trouble free miles on my corolla station wagon (1983 model )-- beat that. No little car is safe - simple principal of mass.

The Tercel was the lowball ad leader at the time. I think $5995 was the money on those things new(!). And yes, they ran seemingly forever, cheap interior and all.

Maybe the new ones. The old Tercels were just cheap, basic, no frills transportation. Get into a Camry or a Cressida, and it was a night and day difference at twice the price. And it wasn't just Toyota. Honda and Nissan/Datsun did the same thing. Honda Civics, and Nissan Micras were cheap, no frills cars. An Accord or Maxima was "nicer". But now, you can't touch a new Civic for less than $16 000. There isn't a Tercel, or a Micra.

I think that although the interiors were a bit "sparse", the fit and finish is where the quality was. Look at a similar year domestic. Sure, they have nice plush interiors, but if you looked at it funny, it would fall apart. Take a Chevy Cavalier or Pontiac Sunfire. Cheap cars, cheap looking interiors, even cheaper hardware that would break if you put a 25 pound box in the trunk or back seat.

Sure, Tercels could have been designed better, but they were unstoppable. They rarely broke. And the interiors rarely came apart.

Hold on bigrigfixer the cavaliers are pretty good cars sure they have a plastic interior I wouldn't call it cheap considering its a heck of a lot better than the cheap plastic in the Aerostars that cracks and what not and the cavaliers 2.2l engine is pretty dang reliable considering its a chevy. fordguy101

Yeah, Cavaliers weren't bad cars. A buddy of mine liked his so much, he got another one when the lease on his first one was up. But I wasn't comparing Cavaliers to Aerostars. If it were me, comparing Tercels to Cavaliers, I'd take a Tercel. Then again, I'd take a Cavalier over an Escort, and an Aerostar over a Tercel.

Apparently the carbed engines are not worth rebuilding when they go "****-up."

Mine has a Horrible rod knock to it and it eats the oil, but it just keeps going and going...

yeah when my '88 first came into my posession in 2002 it ate a quart of oil a week. Switched over to Castrol GTX high mileage and it only ate 1/4 of that.
