Unhappy Flat towing a 97 Expy 4X4

Newbe with Expy. I have a car trailer that I can use, but I am thinking of flat towing (on the ground) behind my motorhome. I think I may need to add equipment to my Expy to allow this with out damage. I tried a search but did not find anything. There may be a driveshaft disconnect (or somthing) that needs done. Is this something that a "backyard" mechanic can do, or should it be done by a shop? Also, any information you can provide about what needs done would help. Any ideas on the cost if I do -vs- if done by shop?

Have you considered something a little lighter to use. That is a lot of weight to tow up and down the road, and you will burn a lot more fuel in the tow rig, plus wear & tear.

they do make an elecric pump for building lube pressure for towing like that, but I just don't really recommend the towing. I know there are some out there that do it. I myself wouldn't want to have to disconnect the drive shaft every time you go to take off, then have to hook it back up when you stop. It isn't a mechanism, you actually take the drive shaft out of the rear end yoke, and tie it up. Also, as stated, it is a bit of weight, and would take up more fuel than the beast will be sucking up anyway.

In your owner's manual, it should state how to tow the Expy. I believe that flat-towing is "forbidden". The design of the A4WD system is the real problem you need to overcome... might have to drop both front & rear driveshafts.

if all 4 wheels will be on the ground then you will need to disconnect both the front and rear shafts since the front axle is always ingaged on newer vehicles with the crap joints, i mean CV joints, hahaha, too bad they don't make em where you can actually have 2wd anymore (lockout hubs!!) anyways, ya, you don't want your tranny spining since theres not pressure built up for lubrication, so everything going to it (front and rear shafts via transfer case) need to be pulled or disengaged. so basically removed since there are no provisions for disengagement on the front or rear.

A small front wheel drive car with the front wheels on a dolly is the easiest way to go.
