Now I was wondering if this is the right part for a 77 f-100 ranger xlt. It is a door jam switch and it has three prongs. The problem is I dont have the old wires. The picture is in my profile.
I seem to remember this discussion on here before, and they came to the conclusion that the three wire switch was for the driver's door, and the two prong was for the passenger door on some trucks. If I remember correctly, two of the prongs were for the dome light, and the other prong was for a headlight reminder or the ignition buzzer, or something like that.
They commented that the vendors gave them the 3 prong for both sides, so they just didn't hook up the third prong on the passenger side.
Can't really tell from the picture, but you probably do need the factory plug. What you could do is look at any 70ish Ford, car or truck, even lincoln or mercury. It has been my experience that Ford used common parts on all their vehicles, so you don't have to waste your time looking for a 77 pickup.
For an example, I have found that a 78 granada and a 79 cougar both had the same little twist-in lamp holders for the dash lamps that my 1980 f150 has(and needed badly).
Solder the wire directly to the switch? Sure, and it would work fine. It would be a pain to swap the switch out later on, but if you don't care about that, it should work fine.
