I have a 1978 F250 4X4 supercab 460/C6. I want to put some headers on it and run 3" dual exhaust straight out the back with some flowmasters. I dont have the means or the patience to take on a job like that so I will have to take it somewhere to get it done. I was wondering if anybody has this type if setup and about how much (approxematally) can I expect to be spending.
deisele75,
I have virtually the same truck, but a '79 model. I think the price breakdown will be about as follows:
-$350 for headers minimum, (I have L&L and love them about $450 for those). 4wd headers are much more thn 2wd.
-$50 for each muffler if you are running mufflers
-$100 for the 3" tube
- Maybe $100-$200 for Installation
Let's see, that adds up to somewhere between $650-$850. Wow, that seems high, but most of the cost is in the headers. BTW, I noticed some new L&L headers for sale on this site somewhere.
Mike
That sounds about right from what I priced out. I was originally looking into regular chassis exit headers but finally decided to go with fenderwell headers and have my exhaust exit on the side just past the cab. If you stick with regular headers here something to keep in mind. I found that if you modify the bracket on your transfer case (on the driver's side) and have it attach to the bottom of the frame rather than the inside you can run the exhaust on that side straight back rather than having to hassle with the bend that runs under the tranny. This will give you much better flow and will ease installation. Just something to look into if you plan to run the exhaust out the back.
Watch ebay for used flowmasters. They can never wear out and I scored a pair of 2.5 in and out 2 chambers for $50. Looked great only used for short time

......................Another Way is to Install a set of Sanderson Headers(shorties) , run 2 1\4 pipe from Both sides and "Y" into one 3 inch Flowmaster 40 muffler and then run a single 3 inch pipe all the way back . Some folks have posted that they couldn't tell any difference 'twixt that setup and a Fullblown set of Duals run all the way back . One thing you Don't need to spend money on is a Set of 3 inch pipes with 3 inch mufflers . You're just wasting your money IMHO . sk..

It all depends. If you plan on beefing up that engine later and really opening up the exhaust ports it wouldn't hurt any. But for most stock apps it's not necessary.
Bob, I got mine thru the carquest guy, mine are on a 351m part number 12508 FLT. Problem with headers on a 460 is you are probably limited to fenderwell exit just because the block is so damn big. Headman has a set of headers that dumps out much like a OEM manifold. That maybe an option too.
I bought a set of 40 series flowmasters on ebay about 3 years ago and had new exhaust from manifold to bumper installed with them shortly afterwards. To this day, they are still running great. In fact, I just got headers put on my new motor this weekend and took it to the muffler shop yesterday. It is ready to be picked up tonight and I can't wait to hear it!!
