bleeding slave cylinder

Hi, can anyone tell me if the engine needs to be running in order to bleed the slave cylinder. 1994 Ranger 2.3 5spd. I don't think any air got into the system.
When I pulled tranny I could see brake fluid in bell housing. When slave went bad I filled resevoir. Does new slave cylinder have fluid in it from factory? Any help would be appreciated.

The new one does not have fluid in it. The engine does not have to be running to bleed the slave cylinder, you bleed it similar to bleeding a brake. DO NOT let the reservoir run dry.

I bled the slave. Got some air out of the system, however not enough to be able to get it into gear. Some dirty fluid came out I kept bleeding until clean fluid came out. Any sugestions?

Thumbs up

Hi thanks for the info, after bleeding the first time I could not get the tranny to go into gear. But thanks to this great website I searched for info on slave bleeding and came across someone who posted awhile back. He talked to a tranny shop and they told him that if he pumped the clutch a bunch of times and then held it to the floor and then have someone bleed it and repeat if nesecary. Well, I didn't have someone else to help me bleed it so in frustration I pumped it a bunch of times, and for hek of it I started the truck and it went into gear. I'm not sure how that worked because I have no leaks anywhere for the air to go out. I got a friend to help me bleed some more. Back to having a full clutch pedal. Once again thanks to all who have helped me through my clutch job.
