Available Transmissions??
Available Transmissions??
I have a 84 Bronco II 4x4 with the V6, its lifted 10", rides on 38.5" tires and has 4.56 gears. I also have a 3 speed auto trans without overdrive. I yanked out all the factory computer stuff and run a carb.
What transmissions can I swap in that have overdrive and would this be a direct bolt in?
I would really like to lower the rpms at crusing speeds and still keep all the torque it has now, so I figured this would be the way to go.
Thanks

I'm not the most knowledgeable about such swaps, but I will chime in with what I've seen.
About the only "bolt in" transmissions are going to be from other Ranger based vehicles. I would venture to say that the only OD transmission that leaves is the dreaded A4LD. If you get an '85 to '87 A4LD with a vacuum controlled 3-4 shift, then you'll get your overdrive, but you won't get lockup of the torque converter clutch. Later A4LD's had an electronic controlled 3-4 shift. However, with the electronic 3-4 shift, it wouldn't be hard to wire in the necessary and create a manually controlled 3-4 shift. 4R44E or 5R55E might also "bolt in", but would require even more extensive electrical work, as they are fully electroniccally controlled.
A better option might be a manual transmission with overdrive. Again, any from a Ranger based vehicle would be most likely to "bolt in"
Considering the size of your tires, you might want to consider some "non-bolt in" transmissions. Most any transmission could be made to work with enough ingenuity, money, and time.

Thanks for the reply. I was actually considering swaping to a manual to avoid any electrical issues, but that first auto trans you suggested may work. I will have to do some more homework as to which would be the best fit for me, but its nice to know I actually have options.
