Another problem this week with them? Had 2 replaced in June and another bit the dust this week? 02 F250SD 5.4. Last June at 58K and now at 73 plus K. Is this a normal thing? Seeing as I have eight and replaced 3 in less than 3 years it must be some kind of malfunction to cause this to happen so often? There's no hint it's going to happen, it's just happens! trimman
Sometimes in very humid situations you can have problems or washing the engine and having water get down there...The rubber boots if they crack can arc out causing a problem and possibly the wrong plugs. I doubt if the truck can cause a problem. In other words the input to the coils being too high etc.
Heres the problem they run in series and when one goes it puts strain on the others so in do time they all will be replaced at one time or another.Murrays discount auto has the motorcraft brand ones for $39.99 ea autozone will price match them if they are more or vise versa.I did the same thing 2 here then 2 more then 2 more then 4 because 2 old ones took out 2 of my new ones. They get hair line cracks on the corners of the housings look really close and take a rag and wipe them down with some degreaser you may find the cracks on the housings. They will be on the bottom and really look good in the corners of the housings.
Are you sure you need the whole coil? If it only missfires under a load, you may only
need the coil boot. I am a automobile technician and work on these all the time and
have found very few bad coils! You can buy the boot seperately for under $5.00.
Go check out forums on 5.4 motors you will find this is a very common problem. The seal on the hood and cowl dont seal and water gets in from there and shorts them out or if they are hot and cold water hits them then they crack.I had 6 out 8 that showed cracks and the truck had 80,000 on it.My buddy had the same problem 7 out of 8 on a 2001 with 60,000 miles.
Wow! Lots of info guys and thanks! I got the idea now of how it works.More to come in the future I presume? Thing is my truck is my livelyhood and I don't have time to do the work myself even it someone diagnosed for me? Thought myself it was a fuel problem? Not for nothing my dealer of 16 years on a moments notice took me in on a need to do service right away. Sure, they charge like hell, but I got my truck back by noon and was able to go to work the next day? I can't work without the truck so the $298 charge for diagnostics and repair is worth it to me. Another day without the truck if I deceided to do it myself would have cost me much more than that in lost income? Thanks again guys! trimman
